Accelerating High-Tech innovation with 3DEXPERIENCE of Dassault Systèmes

March 19th, 2019 by Sanjay Gangal

Sanjay Gangal interviewed Louis Feinstein, Global director of High-Tech sales at Dassault Systèmes at the 2019 SOLIDWORKS World Conference in Dallas, Texas.

SG: Tell us about Dassault Systèmes’ High-Tech area.

LF: We are a part of the industries organization and we’re now one of the four core industries of Dassault Systèmes. We create solutions and technologies that enable customers specifically in the High-Tech areas to build products quicker, faster, lighter, very easily. We spend a lot of time with mechatronics; we spend a lot of time with cross-technology such as mechanical, electrical, software. So, we’re bringing in different aspects of the next generation of products-going beyond mechanical CAD.

SG: Okay. Give us an example of type of industries that you touch and the solutions you provide.

LF: Well, we spend a lot of time with white goods (Heavy consumer durables such as air conditioners, refrigerators, stoves, etc., which used to be painted only in white enamel finish. Despite their availability in varied colors now, they are still called white goods.). When you think about white goods today, most of the white goods are now computer-controlled or have a lot of electronics in them. We support a lot of the white goods industries and our applications allow us to bring all the way from ideation perspective, and all the way through to manufacturing of the white goods and all different types of products.

The other piece is we allow companies to use multiple different types of CAD. Even the white good products have a lot of software, have a lot of different hardware and it’s the day of the digital. The day of the analog tumblers to run washing machines and air conditioners and stuff are gone. So, basically, High-Tech has become pervasive in almost all industries. Like I said, we’re now the fourth core industry within Dassault.

SG: Are you into all the industries including semiconductors or automotive or many of the other high-tech industries.

LF: Well, we support our other industries as well. But being High-Tech, it’s becoming very pervasive. Hi-Tech is everywhere. When you look around, a lot of things that used to be manual, now have a lot of automation in it and… What we’re seeing is the adoption of technology by consumers is really driving this. Customers and consumers really can’t get enough High-Tech. What I mean by High-Tech is- it’s the enablement of doing things easier, a lot of automation. And a few years ago, people were afraid of automation and this type of stuff, but now today if I took away your cell phone, you may get lost, you may not get lost, you may not be able to get yourself home from here. When you look at this, High-Tech is becoming… And we keep using the word pervasive, because it really is: it’s everywhere. I’ve seen so many different products, so many different aspects of products. When you talk about automotive, when you talk about that, we are an enabler of the other industries, but we have our own industry as well. When you think about consumer products and I talked about white goods, all these products now have been… Are really transforming into, I would say, digital assets or digital products.

LF: The other piece that we do is we enable digital transformation of companies, so that basically you have the traditional mechanical, electrical aspects of it, and now, you really need to have a digital business. It’s really the ability to move from your design to your concept, start with ideation and move it all the way into manufacturing and keeping everything together. It’s not easy – to build some of these products because they have components that people didn’t have a couple of years ago. Products now have software in them, they have embedded software, they have run time software- and then on top of it- they have electronics and hardware and a lot of stuff is being customized so that basically it’s being optimized and customized. And this is what we enabled the customers to do. And one of things we allow them to do is to really maintain synchronicity and so forth, in the products.

SG: What would you say are some of the components of your High-Tech solution?

LF: We’re really based around the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, and that’s really the enabler. It allows multi-disciplines, multi-products and actually multiple business aspects to be handled – in a one environment. And what we’re seeing today is… We talk about digital transformation, you need a platform to do that, you need a digital transformation platform. And the 3DEXPERIENCE allows our customers to really go from different aspects of their business and to drive things. And it also allows you to do reuse of your assets. And you think today, a lot of people want to do things prior to… Like if you’re designing a product, you want to see, how the industry or people are going to  react to it. You can take a digital image of it or we can do digital rendering of it and put it out in social media and using the 3DEXPERIENCE Platform, get a gauge to acceptance levels, so you can do things that were never perceivable before and become very, very close with your customers and actually understand what you’re developing and to really, to really enable better designs, and better products.

SG:  What is the best way for people to find out more about the 3DEXPERIENCE platform on internet?

LF:  I would recommend the Dassault Systèmes’ website. We have lots of webinars and check out our 12 different industry groups.
