Austin-Area Students Win FIRST LEGO Robotics Champion Award at State Tournament

St. Gabriel’s Catholic School Recognized for Robot Design, Bio-Medical Research Project

AUSTIN, Texas — (BUSINESS WIRE) — January 17, 2011 — St. Gabriel’s Catholic School was awarded the Champion Award at the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) robotics state competition this weekend clearing the way for a trip to LEGOLAND® to compete for the national title in May 2011.

Team members including Bryce Boushka, Pete Chronis, Evan Gabrielsen, Michael Martinez, Cameron Pepe, Ethan Phillips, Blayne Scallon, James Suffoletta, and Pablo Thiel were recognized for excellence in all 4 areas of the competition (Teamwork, Design & Programming, Research, and Performance). Their high score of 340 in the robot performance category was the second-highest score for the day. The students received high praise for their teamwork and innovative research project in the bio-medical theme, “Body Forward.”

In addition to designing and building a robot for selected missions, each team was required to complete an original research project in Biomedical Engineering advancing an innovative way to maximize the body's potential with the intended purpose of leading happier and healthier lives. The St. Gabriel’s middle school students used nano-technology and chemistry to design a new life-saving strategy for persons who suffer a heart attack, delivering blood-thinning medication on-demand and ultimately preventing fatalities.

Said St. Gabriel’s Coach Michael Scallon, “I am proud of our team and their commitment to the core values of the FIRST LEGO League program. Their commitment to teamwork, problem-solving innovation and passion for their research vision and robot design helped them take the State championship, and I have great confidence that this team can do anything they set out to do.”

The Saber Robotics team will be recognized on Tuesday, January 18th at St. Gabriel’s Catholic School at 8:00 a.m. and media are invited to attend.
