nTopology Announces Series A Funding of $7.6M

Company is the First to Offer Generative CAD Functionality, Enabling the Next-Generation of Complex Designs for 3D Printing, Extrusion and CNC That Are Nearly Impossible to Generate in Traditional CAD Software

November 30, 2017 – New York – nTopology™, the pioneer in innovative generative CAD (Computer-Aided Design) solutions, today announced the closure of $7.6M in Series A funding led by Data Collective (“DCVC”) & Root Ventures with participation from CrunchFund, Haystack, Pathbreaker & 1517.

nTopology's Element™ design software is a generative, function-based engineering application at the intersection of CAD, simulation, and CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) that allows users to fully utilize the latest advances in manufacturing and to make complex optimized structures easily accessible.

nTopology is building smart, physics-based CAD software to help enable ‘generative design’, defined as the computer understanding what you are designing & helping to make better parts, rather than being a set of static drafting tools. The company approaches generative design through functional modeling – the computer understanding not only what is being made, but how it is to be made and even giving feedback on how to design it better.

The next generation of 3D modeling software is being built in Element, the flagship software package by nTopology, which provides a full set of rule-based structures including lattices, ribs, & foams, all generated based on functional requirements. In most cases, these structures cannot be created using existing parametric design software.

The Company’s current customers span markets ranging from aerospace & heavy industry, automotive, medical and other industries. These customers experience orders of magnitude improvements in design time, weight reduction and engineering headcount needed to design complex parts.

“CAD software over the last 30 years has seen only one revolutionary advance – the introduction of parametric design. We strongly believe that with the explosive growth in additive manufacturing, nTopology represents the next advance and is already enabling the rapid design of previously impossible structures,” said James Hardiman, Partner at Data Collective.

“We are very excited to announce the closing of this funding round, as it has enabled us to extend the functionality of Element Pro & add more intelligent design functionality – more physics and more manufacturing processes,” said Bradley Rothenberg, CEO and co-founder of nTopology. “Engineers should be thinking about solving engineering problems & the software should help & assist them along the way. To do this, there needs to be really robust physics & a constraint based modeling system that's fully parametric "under the hood". We are proud to have found visionary VCs who believe in our vision for the future of engineering.”
