May 21, 2013 - At this May’s SME produced Mfg4 event manufacturing professionals got a firsthand look at some of the latest manufacturing technology used in the Aerospace, Defense, Medical, and Energy industries. The technology on exhibit ran the gamut from 3D additive manufacturing solutions, to gigantic milling machines and to the CAM software that runs them. And SolidCAM stood out from the rest.
As each of the almost 7,000 attendees entered the exhibit hall they only had to glance to their left to be pulled into the action surrounding SolidCAM’s impressive booth. Above the booth three 70” high-resolution displays blasted out iMachining in action braced on top of a gleaming aluminum ‘Space Needle.’
Brendan McKenna, who is Eastern Regional Sales Manager for SolidCAM and managed the booth said that, “The aluminum structure was built by SolidCAM's in-house team of engineers and programmers and they used iMachining to fabricate it in record time.”
But, the real action was taking place at two computer stations topped with 40” displays. The SolidCAM booth was staffed with a crew of five seasoned CAM programming and machining professionals. This team fits the typical profile of SolidCAM’s sales and support team who all have years of hands-on machining experience.

These experts worked in shifts or in tandem non-stop at each computer station helping people who wanted to take a deeper look into SolidCAM and learn how it might help them solve some of their machining problems. Demos featured ease of programming, full integration into SolidWorks with instant two-way associability, tool path sheets, simulation accuracies, and of course iMachining was demoed and compared with standard machining and, the simulations were run using set-up numbers provided by each guest.
Brendan said that, “For every single presentation, we show a standard pocketing cycle or contouring operation on our part with their parameters. Then we show them what we can do with iMachining, and quite frankly, most of the time people are absolutely blown away! They see the time savings and these efficiencies really excite people.”
After people learned a little about iMachining the most frequent question heard in the booth was, “Do I have to go out and buy a new machine to use iMachining? The answer was always an emphatic “no!” And then to prove the point the SolidCAM rep would run an iMachining simulation using the booth visitor's machine parameters and watch as they were ‘wowed’ by the results.
Over the show’s three days the booth’s glass jar filled quickly with business cards and each day a random drawing was held with three seats of SolidCAM Xpress CAM software awarded to the lucky winners. Congratulations!
