Upgraded Product Line
Beginning at the top with Cobalt v5, the award-winning, feature-based, solid/surface hybrid modeler is now improved with the addition of 2D constraints. This will give the user the advantage of working in a freeform modeling environment as well as one parametrically controlled by geometric, dimensional and/or formula-based constraints. In addition, a wealth of modeling enhancements has been made, including the addition of rib and lip features, very useful in the creation of plastic parts.
Both Cobalt v5 and the product one level below it, Xenon v5, are improved with the addition of a Bill of Materials capability and shaded views on multi-view drawing sheets. Xenon v5 also adds associative detail and section views.
In addition, Ashlar's inexpensive, but powerful Argon has been seeded with a wealth of 3D modeling enhancements in version 5, which are also found in the two products above it. For instance, the Extrude and Sweep tools for solids and surfaces now support advanced cross section control, and extensive distance and termination options. Also, the Skin and Loft commands now support intermediate sections and tangency options.
Finally, there are changes to the foundation upon which Cobalt, Xenon, Argon and Neon all rest, improving them all. For instance, all four products are based on Spatial Technology's modeling kernel, ACIS version 7. Also, everyday user productivity was considered in the upgrade, and the quartet of products now includes a floating layer manager, hierarchical tree-structured layers and support for transparent objects in the edit window. Interoperability across the board has been upgraded with improvements in the STEP and IGES converters, and a CATIA 4 translator has been added.
"This is the most extensive and robust single release we've ever had," says Robert Bou, president of Ashlar-Vellum. "Version 5 is packed with large and small enhancements that significantly improve productivity, creativity and ease of use. Feedback from beta testers has been nothing short of amazing, with many early adopters feeling as if their creative horizons were dramatically expanded."
