New Release of QNX Aviage Multimedia Suite Offers Enhanced Video and Apple iPod Support

OTTAWA, Dec. 15, /PRNewswire/ -- QNX Software Systems today announced the commercial availability of the QNX(R) Aviage(R) Multimedia Suite, version 1.1.0. First launched in 2007, this automotive-grade middleware solution is used by Tier 1 automotive suppliers to build head units, rear-seat entertainment systems, multimedia radios, and other infotainment products for the automobile. The new version of the suite offers several enhancements, including iPod 1-wire support, which enables the delivery of audio and video through a single USB cable, thereby eliminating the expense of a multi-cable or special split-cable solution.

Using the QNX Aviage Multimedia Suite, system designers can give end-users seamless access to music and video from various sources, including internal hard drives, USB data sticks, and personal entertainment devices such as Apple iPods, Microsoft Zune players, Certified for Windows Vista devices, and MP3 players. The suite is the only embedded middleware solution that allows a single Apple Authentication chip to support multi-zone systems. As a result, separate listening zones inside a car, bus, train, plane, or other multi-passenger vehicle can share a single authentication chip, dramatically reducing overall system costs.

The QNX Aviage multimedia suite 1.1.0 also offers enhanced video support, including a sample h.264 decoder for the Intel chipset, which provides a rich feature set and support for playing and distributing video across an in-car network. The suite also now supports iTunes tagging, which allows users to "tag" songs heard on the radio for subsequent purchase and downloading onto their iPods.

In addition, version 1.1.0 offers enhanced metadata/ripping synchronization, improved error handling and notification, new damping audio filters, improved documentation for working with Apple IC and explorer interfaces, and improved configurability.

"The QNX Aviage Multimedia Suite dramatically improves the development process for designers building next-generation automotive entertainment systems," said Andrew Poliak, automotive business manager, QNX Software Systems. "Moreover, it reduces the complexity and challenges that developers face when building new applications that enable drivers and passengers to bring their favorite music, movies, and games inside the car."

The QNX Aviage Multimedia Suite includes an intelligent multimedia engine, along with a fully integrated suite of device drivers, encoders/decoders, and multimedia file systems. It runs on a variety of 32-bit CPUs and DSPs, including ARM9+, SH-4+, PowerPC processors, and TI OMAP, and automotive-grade hardware platforms from Freescale, Renesas, Texas Instruments, and Intel.

The QNX Aviage Multimedia Suite version 1.1.0 is now commercially available.
