Immersion And SMK Sign License Agreement

SAN JOSE, Calif.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Feb. 27, 2006— Immersion Corporation (Nasdaq: IMMR), a leading developer and licensor of touch feedback technology, and SMK Corporation (TOKYO:6798), a global manufacturer of electromechanical components, have signed a worldwide technology license agreement. Under the agreement, SMK may use Immersion's TouchSense technology in its haptic touch panels for automotive OEMs and their tier suppliers. In addition to automotive, SMK may include the technology in touch panels for office equipment, appliances and white goods, industrial controls, kiosks, point of sale terminals, and aerospace applications.

"SMK will use Immersion's programmable haptic technologies to further enhance our touch panel solutions," said Shinobu Kaneuji, general manager, SMK Touch Panel Division, Sales department. "We believe that advancing automotive controls improves the driving experience and simplifies a growing number of functions within the car."

"Our TouchSense technology provides strong, distinctive, vibrational patterns that provide the type of engaging response and rich tactile information that drivers like about mechanical controls -- the feel of pushing a button or depressing a membrane switch," said Mike Zuckerman, senior vice president and general manager of Immersion's Industrial business unit. "SMK's innovative, technological leadership and its relationships within the automotive industry can help accelerate implementation of this new technology."

Touch panels enhanced with Immersion's TouchSense technology can help to reduce glance times and distractions for drivers accessing in-car information. The technology works by vibrating the display's touchscreen in response to programmed effects that may vary in frequency, waveform, magnitude, and duration. With TouchSense technology, a driver touching on-screen buttons perceives the crisp qualities and particular force and push-away characteristics of physical buttons, providing a more intuitive, natural, and multisensory experience. The touch effects can be programmed to render context-sensitive cues and can be applied to different objects so they can be easily discriminated from each other. In addition, system designers can synchronize the tactile sensations with sound and on-screen graphical images for an even more powerful user experience.
